Breast Cancer Treatments:
The treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Depending upon the severity of the breast cancer tumor , i.e the malignancy of the tumor, the chemotherapy number of sessions and radiation is decided by the doctor. There is one more treatment , i.e , Hormone therapy treatment after the chemotherapy / radiation or both. The hormone therapy treatment is given if the hormones in women, estrogen and progesterone receptors are found positive. That means, if the cancer tumor takes the help of the hormones to spread in the other parts of the body , then it is called as hormone receptors positive.
Chemotherapy: It is a type of treatment therapy in which, anti-cancer drugs are given to the patient to kill the cancer cells. Due to this, the cancer don't spread to the other parts of the body and if any found then they are destroyed. There are two types of chemotherapy treatment.
1. Adjuvant chemotherapy. When chemotherapy is given after the surgery or in addition to the surgery then , it is called as Adjuvant Chemotherapy.
2. Neo- adjuvant chemotherapy. : Sometimes in some cases, Chemotherapy is given before the surgery to shrink the cancer tumor and then chemotherapy is given. This helps the surgeon to remove shrinked cancer cells while operating.
Chemotherapy is given inside the vein of the body. It needs qualified nurses to do so. The drugs that Chemotherapy uses have very high effect of chemicals on the body.
Side Effects of Chemotherapy are discussed in this site later.
Notes regarding Chemotherapy:
( These experiences are not specified in any other website as these are experienced by my aunt and so I can suggest you how to take care while receiving Chemotherapy).
Radiation / Radiotherapy:
Radiation is a process in which uses high energy x-ray beams to kill the cancer cells. It is given to that part of the body where cancer cells are found. For eg: if breast cancer then radiation is given to only that breast where tumor is found or operated. The main intention of Radiotherapy is to kill cancerous tissues if any remaining inside the breast. Not a single cell should be left behind due to which again the cancerous tissues may grow. So to avoid this, Radiation is given.
In New York Times, it is clearly stated by Dr. Buchholz, that radiation could prevent recurrence and increase survival. Radiation is just like X-Ray as it takes and feels on our body. There is no pain during the treatment. But it has its own side effects. Side effects of Radiation is discussed in this website later. Radiation can cure, control or help relieve symptoms of cancer.
Some notes regarding Radiation:

- Chemotherapy may be given in few sessions. Like 5 sessions, 6 or 8 or more, depending upon the stage or grade of Cancerous tissues.
- Each chemotherapy session is given after every 21 days of earlier session.
- One blood vessel is used for every chemo session. That means, the blood vessel used once cannot be used again for next or forthcoming sessions. The blood vessel becomes hardened and even if tried giving then the dosage will not flow in the vein.
- Care should be taken as to not to move from the bed when chemo is going on, as the needle may move inside and maybe the drug will start flowing outside the vein under the skin. This damages the skin and makes it swollen and it is not easily cured.
- After every chemotherapy session, the patient may feel weak and may feel tired. The chemotherapy drugs kills the cancer cells and in this process , some normal and good cells are also damaged. This may in turn lessen the count of WBC's,(White Blood Cells).
- After every Chemotherapy session, that whole week , the patient feels weak.
- After every 15- 17 days, blood test is done. The Oncologist goes through the blood report and informs whether everything is going on normal. Or any other care should be taken.
- The chemotherapy is not given to that hand which side operation is done . As this may make the hand swollen.
- Hands pain on which side chemo is given.
- Hair loses in between 2nd and 3rd session.
- Before hair loss, the scalp becomes very sensitive and pains when you keep on a pillow. Best is to cut or trim your hair before chemotherapy.
- Hair lost is in bunch. They become sticky and they get detached from the scalp before falling.

Some notes regarding Radiation:
- Treatment starts after 1-3 weeks after decision .
- It is like and ordinary X-ray machine.
- Treatment will be from Monday to Friday.
- It will take hardly 5-10 minutes for the daily treatment.
- You will be offered with a gown and some tips how to sleep on the bed for receiving Radiation.
- Radiotherapist will not accompany you inside the room when your radioactive rays are passed to kill the cancer cells. He will be on the different room and will be seeing you in a closed circuit TV and will communicate with you via intercom.
- Once Radiation is started, there will be some side effects also.
- You will experience redness at the affected area. The area becomes tender as some normal cells also get damaged.
- Care should be taken while taking the Radiation as to not use any harsh chemicals, or powder, or soaps, to the affected area.
